Summer Time Adventure

Updated: Aug 13, 2023

Adventures with the teenager!

This summer the family took a trip to the A! We jumped in the car and made a 4 hour drive to Atlanta! The trip was a weekend getaway so we can do something as a family. It's been a minute. So, the weekend trip to Atlanta consisted of staying in an Air BNB, college tour, dinner at a nice restaurant, mini golf, and of course the swimming pool. The trip served its purpose and was a great way to unwind even if it was just for a short moment.

Let's start with the Air BNB, well we were the 1st guest and it was ok. The apartment was nice however the second bedroom wasn't fully furnished. That wasn't a great start. I went back looked at the listing and noticed there were never any pictures posted of the second bedroom and now I know why. The bedroom didn't have any dressers or storage space. It literally had an air mattress and another bed on a low bed frame. However, the kid didn't care much because the living room was huge and the bedroom connected to an outdoor patio. Honestly, all that mattered to her was the simple fact a pool was on the property. Aside from that everything else in the apartment was great. Oh wait, one other down side was the elevator and the keypad. There were glitches in technology throughout the weekend that caused us to waste time trying to get in and out of the parking deck, access the pool, and the elevator. However, that was completely out of the hands of the Air BNB owner.

Ok, moving on to the real reason for the trip, the college tour. The kid found out we were going to Atlanta the day we left. However, she had no idea why we were going to Atlanta. I like keeping things to myself so she doesn't ask 500 questions. As we got close to the college she started seeing signs and didn't realize we were actually going to tour Spelman College. Once she figured it out she was extremely excited. The kid just finished her freshman year and has spent the majority of the summer completing scholarships. The husbae and I thought it would be a great idea to start allowing her to visit these colleges. Spelman College was a great start as it has been the kid's first choice for some time now. As we waited for her first official tour to start we researched the top HBCUs with psychology programs. That sparked a conversation; why are they the top schools, can we visit those schools as well, where are these schools located, etc. She was excited!

Lowkey the husbae and I were excited for this tour as well. I've always wanted to visit Spleman and he wanted to see Morehouse. These two colleges are in their right are the Mecca of HBCUs filled with great history. Not to mention lots of scenes from A Different World were filmed on the campus. Our tour guide was simply amazing. She was knowledgeable, real, and inspiring. She took her time answers questions, she gave honest answers, debunked myths, and shared her reasoning for attending Spleman. She playfully bantered with another alumna over their dorm wars. The kid enjoyed every moment of the tour. She was all in so much so she didn't even want me taking pictures of her. McCuse me! LOL. I took pics anyway. She walked away with a swag bag and a greater interest in her first choice. The husbae walked away with photos of different historical buildings and pictures of himself in front of iconic settings from A Different World.

We ended the college tour and headed to the Sugar Factory. This was my husbae and the kid's first time at the Sugar Factory. The husbae was surprised by the prices and the kid was surprised by the desserts. LOL. The food was delicious. Honesty, we were full but couldn't;t leave without getting dessert. So, we indulged, rightfully so. Following dinner we headed back to the Air BNB so they kid could swim, the husbae could chill, and for me to read a book pool side. Day one was easily a 9 out of 10 day.

Day Two & Three

Day two was a scorcher, that Atlanta heat ain't no joke! The family headed to Puttshack! We love us some mini golf and family competition. This place was next level, the esthetics, the technology, the vibe, the EV-ERY-THING was on point. We enjoyed 9 holes of mini golf with the KID whipping up on both of us. Afterwards we enjoyed a few appetizers and concluded the outing with some pictures of course. We retreated to the air bnb and enjoyed the pool. The kid linked up with another kid in the pool and was able to play with several pool tools. We enjoyed some old 90's music provided by another pool goer. After our hands were wrinkled we returned to the apartment for showers, movies, and dinner. Overall, the trip served its purpose.

ME TIME

Throughout the summer it became very apparent the kid wanted individual time with each parent. She wanted me time, me time with mommy and me time with daddy. I think she was just trying to get more stuff out of us, honestly. LOL. Nonetheless we accommodated her wishes. Earlier in the summer she and I had a mommy and daughter day. Find out all the deets of that adventure in the last blog post. Then she had a me time with daddy recently.

The two of them went on another college tour. They traveled to North Carolina A & T State University. She has been on A & T's campus previously when I was a graduate student. But, she didn't get to see much. The two of them endured the heat and learned more about A & T' s history and a few things about what the college had to offer. Afterwards she was spoiled with a trip to the bookstore. There she picked up some Aggie swag. Overall, she enjoyed her 2nd college tour but insisted it did NOT beat out Spelman. We intend on taking her back again but this time connecting with someone in the department she wants to major. Hoping that this will give her more to go on besides judging based off the tour guides knowledge. They concluded their outing with lunch from Stephanie's. If you haven't been and you're in Greensboro, North Carolina you are missing out big time.

A Family That Plays Together Stays Together

It appears that mini golf is our thing. A few weeks after returning from Atlanta we found a relatively new mini golf course about 30 minutes away from our home. We traveled to Concord to play 18 rounds of mini golf at Jocko's. The mini golf setup was pretty cute. It gave us Florida vibes, bright colors, water fountains, and extreme holes. The kid hit a hole in one twice, I managed to hit a whole in one once. I started off pretty solid and in the lead The kid challenged me a time a two but the back 9 gave her a run for her money. The front 9 gave the husbae a time. He usually does pretty well but he was stinking up the joint. He was able to get himself together at the back 9 when the kid struggled. I walked away victorious, the husbae came in second, and the kid finished in last place. The trash talking was at an all time high but once the kid started to struggle she was somber and we had to hold back on the trash talking. Well, I had to hold back on trash talking. The husbae had to contain his excitement as he slowly inched away from last place. LOL.
